Course Descriptions

 

 

Art 1

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite:    None

Two-semester course focusing on the Elements of Art: line, shape, form, texture, color, value; the Principles of Design: movement, rhythm, unity, variety, emphasis, proportion; the introduction of art from other cultures and various periods in Art History.

 

Art II Drawing

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite: Art I

Drawing: This two-semester course deals with various techniques in a variety of media. Course covers style of earlier artist and cultures. Students need to provide some of their own materials and tools are requested by the instructor.

 

Art III Drawing

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite: Art II

Painting: This two-semester course deals with developing studio techniques and applying the skills and principles in assignments. Students should be responsible for their materials and assignments.

Art IV Drawing

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite: Art III

Design: This two-semester course is for advanced students to take individual responsibility for their work, concepts and implementations. Students are responsible for their tools and materials.

 

Theatre Arts 

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite: None

Theatre Arts I is a survey course that establishes the base for all subsequent theatre courses. As a prerequisite for other courses, Theatre Arts I encompasses: theatrical vocabulary, elements, conventions, and basic concepts; historical and cultural backgrounds; experiences that develop a broad-based body of knowledge and technical skills; strategies for evaluating theatre experiences. Performance in classroom exercises and productions is required. Course will culminate in a required public performance of a one-act play or variety review. Attendance at after school rehearsals for the public performance may be required.

 

Theatre Arts II

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite: TH1

This is an acting style class. We will focus on the different historical periods of theatre and the style of acting that goes along with it. We will also focus on script analysis. We will be reading famous works from many different authors. Students in this class will be required to perform in two public performances.

 

Theatre Production I

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite:  Theatre Arts I

 

Theatre Production II

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite:  Theatre Production I

 

Theatre Production III

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite:  Theatre Production II

Theatre Production I, and subsequent courses focus and expand the knowledge base and continually refine techniques and skills in their specific domains. The members of this class will produce and perform two to three shows during the course of a school year. It is understood that students selecting this course have chosen to specialize in acting, directing, and/or a support staff position such as publicity. After studying the historical, cultural, and societal influences pertinent to their production, students describe how these factors are at work in different aspects of the play. Students discuss specific examples from the play and provide rationales for their opinions and actions as they create characters and rehearse the play. Participation in all productions as assigned by the Director is required. Attendance at all after school rehearsals is required. Students wishing to take Theatre Production must prepare a one minute monologue and audition for the teacher.

 

 

Technical Theatre I

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite:  Theatre Arts I

 

Technical Theatre II

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite:  Technical Theatre I

 

Technical Theatre III

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite:  Technical Theatre II

Technical Theatre I and subsequent courses focus and expand the knowledge base and continually refine techniques and skills in their specific domains. Students are involved with production tasks such as basic crew assignments, set construction, lighting and front of house responsibilities for each school production. The members of this class will produce two to three shows during the course of a school year. It is understood that students selecting this course have chosen to specialize in the technical aspects of production. After studying the historical, cultural, and societal influences pertinent to their production, students describe how these factors are at work in different aspects of the play. Students discuss specific examples from the play and provide rationales for their opinions and actions as they design and build sets, costumes and lighting for each production. Participation in all productions as assigned by the Director is required. Attendance at all after school rehearsals is required.

 

Dance I

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite: Tryouts required

This is a one-year course that introduces first year Wranglerette Dance/Drill Team members to basic skill levels of technique with knowledge in conditioning and flexibility training, ballet, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, props, and other team-style routine genre along with basic leadership and teambuilding skills. Emphasis is placed on conditioning, flexibility, technique, and working as a member of a team. Standard dance team performance opportunities are available at this level along with team competition exercise. Dance I members are encouraged to audition for social office positions on next year’s team.

 

Dance II

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite: Dance I;  and Audition

This is a one-year course that follows Dance I. Dance II provides study for Wranglerette team members who have achieved basic levels of skill, technique, and knowledge in conditioning and flexibility training, ballet, lyrical, hip hop, props, and other team-style routine genre. Emphasis is placed on expressing emotions through movement, improvisation, dance composition, student choreography, artistic growth, performing as a member of a team, and leadership skills. A number of performance opportunities are available at this level including the standard team performances and to audition for social and dance officer positions for next year’s team.

 

Dance III

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite: Dance II;  and Audition

This is a one-year course that follows Dance II. Dance III provides a more advanced dance study for Wranglerette team members who demonstrate strength in the elements of dance while effectively expressing connections between emotions and movement. Emphasis is placed on projection and expression, performing complex dance sequences, and developing leadership skills. Several performance, teaching, and leadership opportunities are available at this level including holding team officer positions. Dance III class members are expected to assist in teaching and perfecting technique and performance routines to Dance I and Dance II members. In addition to the standard team performance opportunities, including team competition, Dance III students are expected to perform solos and participate in ensembles at competition and in the annual spring show and are encouraged to audition for social and dance officer positions for next year’s team.

 

Dance IV

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite: Dance III;  and Audition

This is a one-year course that follows Dance III. Dance IV provides advanced dance study for Wranglerette team members who demonstrate consistency in performing advanced technical dance skills and exhibit a strong understanding of the choreographic process. Numerous performance, teaching, and leadership opportunities are available at this level including team officer positions, standard team performance venues, team competition, and helping teach and perfect technique and performance routines to Dance I, Dance II, and  Dance III class members. Dance IV students are expected to choreograph and perform solos and ensembles at competition and in the annual spring show. Dance IV students are also expected to assist with the planning and choreography of the annual spring show and with the audition process for selecting next year’s team.

 

 

Music I Choir

Music II Choir

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite: Audition, teacher approval

Music III Choir

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite: Audition, teacher approval

Music IV Choir

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite: Audition, teacher approval

Treble Choir: The Treble Choir is open to girls by audition and teacher approval only. Members of this choir are encouraged to compete at UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest. Attendance is required at all scheduled concerts and at UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest. Students will learn music theory, sightreading  skills, vocal techniques that are appropriate to their level. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of choral repertoire. Interested students should contact the choir director for the audition.

Varsity Mixed Choir: The Varsity Mixed Choir is open to boys and girls by audition and teacher approval only. Members of this choir are strongly encouraged to compete at TMEA Region Auditions and UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest. Attendance is required at all scheduled concerts and at UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest. Students will learn music theory, sightreading skills, and vocal techniques that are appropriate for their level. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of choral repertoire. Interested students should contact the choir director for an audition.

 

 

Music I Band

Music II Band

Music III Band

Music IV Band

Credit: 1.0                              Prerequisite: Director Approval

Marching Band: Open to all Mineral Wells Band students. This band will perform at all MWHS football games, plus UIL marching contest and other major marching festivals in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.

Honors Band: Students will audition using the TMEA All-State tryout material. This band performs at UIL and will perform Grade 4 and 5 level music.

Symphonic Band: The second concert band in which chair position is determined by auditions on material other than TMEA All-State tryout music. This band will attend UIL concert and sight-reading contest.
