Spanish Course Descriptions

FOREIGN LANGUAGE

**Bilingual students that can read and write Spanish may contact their counselor about taking Credit-by-Exams to earn credit in place of Spanish classes. Placement test are also available to allow students to start at a higher level class.

 

Spanish 1 Credit: 1.0

This is a beginning Spanish course that introduces the student to basic concepts of reading, writing, listening, and speaking.  Students are presented with opportunities to learn cultural customs and practices from the context of the activities.

 

Spanish 1 PreAP Credit: 1.0 + 10 GPA points

PEIMS: 03440100 (SPAN1Q) LOCAL ID: 8021 Prerequisite: Complete PreAP-AP contract. See counselor.  Course content will be the same as Spanish 1. However, this class will be faster paced and is designed for those students that plan to take Spanish 2 Pre-AP, Spanish 3 Pre-AP, and beyond. The course includes additional opportunities for students to use the language in various authentic contexts. More reading, writing and speaking are stressed. Authentic resources and special projects supplement the textbook presentation of the Spanish speaking culture.

 

Spanish 2 Credit: 1.0

PEIMS: 03440200 (SPAN2) LOCAL ID: 8002 Prerequisite: Spanish 1. The course is the continuation of the basic Spanish program. Using a function-oriented approach combined with a grammar sequence, the course broadens the student’s ability to communicate in Spanish in a variety of contexts. Students will increase their knowledge of Hispanic culture, art, and history.

 

Spanish 2 PreAP Credit: 1.0 + 10 GPA points

PEIMS: 03440200 (SPAN2Q) LOCAL ID: 8022 Prerequisite: Spanish 1; Complete PreAP-AP contract. See counselor.  Course content will be the same as Spanish. However, this class will be faster paced and is designed for those students that plan to take Pre-AP Spanish 3, and beyond. The course includes additional opportunities for students to use the language in various authentic contexts. More reading, writing and speaking are stressed. Authentic resources and special projects supplement the

textbook presentation of the Spanish speaking culture. Portions of the class will be conducted in Spanish.

 

Spanish 3 Pre-AP Credit: 1.0 + 10 GPA points

PEIMS: 03440300 (SPAN2) LOCAL ID: 8003 Prerequisite: Spanish 2; Complete PreAP-AP contract. See counselor. This course continues the development of language skills for communication including conversational situations, vocabulary development for reading and expression, and reasonable fluency both oral and written. Students continue to increase their knowledge of Hispanic culture, art, and history. Much of the class is conducted in Spanish. This course is designed for students who plan to continue to AP Spanish IV and take the Spanish AP exam.

Spanish 4AP (Spanish Language) Credit: 1.0 + 13 GPA points

PEIMS: 03440400 (SPAN4P) LOCAL ID: 8004 Prerequisite: Spanish 3; Complete AP contract. See counselor. Spanish 4 further develops reading comprehension, as well as listening, speaking, and writing skills. Students will prepare to take the Spanish Language AP examination for which college credit may be awarded. Class is almost exclusively conducted in Spanish.

 

Spanish 5 AP (Spanish Literature) Credit: 1.0 + 13 GPA points

PEIMS: 03440500 (SPAN5P) LOICAL ID: 8018 Prerequisite Spanish 4; Complete AP contract. See counselor. This course is designed to equal the rigor of a college level Spanish literature course. Students will be introduced to the formal study of a representative body of Peninsular and Latin American literary texts. Students will prepare to take the Spanish Literature AP examination for which college credit may be awarded. This course is almost exclusively conducted in Spanish.

 

College Spanish 1-Dual credit Spanish IV Credit: 0.5-1.0 + College + 10 GPA points

College Spanish 1 offers two semesters of college credit. This course further develops listening, speaking, reading and writing.
